Information Skills and Concepts

Virginia Beach School Libraries' objectives for information skills are called the "Essential Information Literacy Skills" (EILS).  These objectives are based on the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLS), Virginia Beach Schools Language Arts objectives (VBOs), and on the library standards recommended by the American Library Association in the book, Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning.  See the EILS objectives for each grade at the bottom of this page.

 
Parts of a book:  Cover, spine, title page (author, illustrator, publisher, place of publication), call number, illustration, copyright date.

Bibliography:  reference book, source, citation, title, author, publisher, URL, copyright date, place of publication, notetaking, plagiarism.  (See the "Whose Work Is It" file at the bottom of this page)

Features of a nonfiction book:  table of contents, index, glossary, timeline, map, photograph, drawing, bold print, italics, headings, captions, labels.

Genre:  fiction, nonfiction, poetry, biography, autobiography, historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, realistic fiction.  (See "Genre sheet" posted at the bottom of this page).

Poetry terms:  rhyme, rhythm, pattern, metaphor, simile, alliteration, onomatopeia.

Poetry types: limerick, haiku, cinquain, diamante, acrostic, concrete poem. 

Online Catalog ("Destiny"): keyword, author, subject, title searches; locating materials in the library by call numbers/letters.  Use the "Selecting a Book" tool below to help you search for a good book! 

Technology:  online etiquette, internet safety, URL, search engine, accessing and evaluating information, discerning fact & opinion; information tools (databases, bookmarks, wikis, blogs).

Library Behavior:  responsibility for taking care of materials and returning them on time, showing respect for others, following proper procedures.

Reference Sources:  variety of print and electronic sources such as dictionary, index, glossary, thesaurus, encyclopedia, almanac, atlas (Grade 3), newspapers and periodicals (Grade 5).

Dictionary:  entry words, guide words, syllables, parts of speech, pronunciation, definition, multiple meanings, alphabetical order, index tabs.

Thesaurus:  synonyms, antonyms, guide words.

Atlas:  maps, coordinates, index, symbols, map key, compass rose.

Encyclopedia:  guide words, articles, volume, headings, subject or topic.

Almanac:  current facts, statistics, charts, graphs, tables, timelines, index, cross references.
